Re: A Message (Short Story)

I did think about including something to do with that letter, but decided against it in the end. I guess I felt that for Tom the letter never had to be delivered and it may have been something he never wanted to visit again. I think if I were in his shoes, I probably wouldn't have wanted to think of the letter after this point as I'm sure a man would be in mental agony having to write it. No, I wanted this chapter to be happy and about the future that they both looked forward to and so that is why I didn't revisit it.

The title of the story "A Message" was a theme that ran throughout the story: first, Tom was writing when he first met Adele in the hospital (hence the reference to his notes in his letter to her on their wedding day); second, after their second meeting at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, he got a message to Adele through her friend, asking her to meet him New Year's Eve; third, when he had to leave London before they could go out on their first real date (after they met NYE and had that magical kiss) and he rushed to get his message to her at the hospital; and then the countless other messages he sent her while he had to be away. It was Tom's persistence through these messages that won Adele over in the end, which is why I thought it was fitting for the last chapter to include one final (romantic) message to her.

From beginning to end I loved writing this story. I can't wait to re-read it, perhaps over the Christmas break, as this time I get to relive it as a reader and not merely the writer. It was a lot of fun and a bit of a roller coaster ride for me. Yes, Tom gave me the inspiration but these two characters turned into something more for me. They will always have a place in my heart.

Thank you, my friend, for being part of the ride with me and for enjoying it (nearly) as much as I did. emoticon emoticon
